California Figwort, or California Bee Plant Seed
Scrophularia californica
Beautiful native perennial that grows from so-called California up to so-called British Columbia. Their lobed, deep-magenta flowers hang like little bells from spring into mid-summer, dangling from tall, unassuming stalks with toothed blue-green leaves. A very popular plant for many native pollinators, including bees, moths, butterflies and hummingbirds! Typically found along roadsides, woodland slopes, and coastal sage scrub and chaparal landscapes.
Prefers partial sun and moist, well-draining soil that’s not too wet or too dry. Tolerates drought but prefers occasional watering in hot conditions. Will spread by seed and by rhizomes. Can grow 3-6 ft tall and 2-3 ft wide.
Direct sow the seeds in the fall, or cold stratify for 30 days before planting in the spring.
