Saffron Crocus
Crocus sativus
Saffron or autumn crocus is a fall-blooming bulb with pink to purple blooms. The graceful, grass-like leave appear before bloom time. The orange stigmas are the spice saffron and have been cultivated in the Mediterranean region for thousands of years. The spice can be carefully harvested around October in the PNW. Pick the threads in the morning once the dew has dried.
These plants don’t produce seed, but the corms slowly multiply and can be divided every few years to propagate.
Plant bulbs 3-4” deep in well-drained soil. They love a rock garden or the edge of an herb garden, and can also be grown in containers.
Grows 6” tall, in sun to very light shade.
#1 pot, 5 plants per pot
