Native evergreen found in the forests and shrublands of western Turtle Island. Yellow flowers in early spring attract hummingbirds and other pollinators, as well as birds like bushtits. Berries are beloved by many birds. Medicinal in many ways. Edible berries (with some prep, they’re tart!).
This plant is on the Portland Plant List. (aka Berberis aquifolium)
Grows 5-15’ tall, 2-8’ wide. Tolerates most light and moisture levels, with a preference for light shade and well-draining soil. They will grow taller and more leggy with less light, with less blooms and berries. Great addition to a hedge or habitat area.
