Pearly Everlasting
Anaphalis margaritacea
Native. White ‘everlasting’ flowers in summer. Great for rock gardens. Host plant to the American Painted Lady Butterfly.
The delicate, almost paper-y flowers of these PNW natives are blooming in the nursery, garden and many ecosystems across the Northwest right now. Their blooms arrive midsummer and stay into fall as lovely white drops among our late-season flowers.
They also made great dried flowers for bouquets and wreaths!
These easy-to-grow friends love disturbed areas with lots of sun and require little attention. They prefer well-draining moist soil, but become fairly drought tolerant once established, offer great erosion control, and provide awesome native insect habitat! Their late bloom time makes them important late summer pollinator food and larval habitat for many native butterflies and moths, including painted lady and skipper butterflies.
Pearly everlasting also offers many medicinal uses - from allergies, cold, flu and respiratory ailments, to digestive concerns and wound care (ask your local herbalist about their magic!)
