Walking onion
Allium × proliferum
Also known as tree onion, top-setting onions or Egyptian walking onions.
This perennial onion produces clumps of small, shallot-like bulbs with a flavor similar to leeks. They also send up stalks with clusters of small onion bulbs that can be used in salads or picked like pearl onions.
The stalked bulb-clusters sometimes fall over from their weight and root in the soil, hence the name ‘walking onion’.
Plant in full sun to very light shade, in well drained soil. Likes regular summer water.
