Hopi Black Dye Sunflower Seed

Helianthus annua ‘Hopi Black Dye’

Tceqa' Qu' Si in Hopi

Annual. A large flowerhead with yellow rays. Black/maroon seeds are a traditional dye that can produce grey to purple hues depending on dying techniques. Hopi people use this natural dye for fiber and basketry, and have been cultivating sunflowers for thousands of years. Tall and cheerful, great for pollinators and birds. Edible seeds are highly nutritious.

Direct sow after the last frost. Thin seedlings, selecting for those with darker cotyledons as those will have darker hued seeds. Beware of squirrels digging up freshly planted seeds.

Grows 6-8 ft tall. Plant in full sun.

Planting Depth: 1" deep

Days to Germination: 8 to 10 days

Size: One packet
